The New Year brings about new opportunities to become the best version of you. While many will make resolutions such as eating healthier or exercising more, let’s not forget to set professional goals as well. Steve Jobs stated “A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect…” Determining your career path and creating a plan involves connecting your job skills dots.

According to the “Class of 2017: Hiring Outlook” research conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the top 5 attributes include ability to work in a team, problem solving, verbal and written communication skills, strong work ethic, and leadership. The Center for Leadership, Activities and Career Services (CLACS) at Ferris State University can help you discover ways to get involved, develop your skills, and connect the dots toward a career you’ll love.

CLACS offers certificate programs that you can complete at your own pace including a job shadow experience and soft skills training. You can also participate in leadership programming, student organizations, volunteering, and employer networking events. CLACS can help you explore options and brand yourself as a professional.

Here are a few New Year resolutions to help you become successful:

  • Create a profile in Handshake; located in MyFSU.
  • Schedule a personal appointment with the CLACS Career Center to make a career plan.
  • Attend networking events.
  • Explore two different careers through job shadowing or volunteering.
  • Locate a mentor who is doing what you want to do.
  • Write a blog on a topic related to your future career.
  • Like potential employer’s pages on social media.
  • Spend one hour a week reading up on your industry.
  • Join a student organization related to your field of study.
  • Complete the on-line soft skills training in OrgSync.
  • Enter your involvement in OrgSync and request your official co-curricular transcript.
